Horse lovers pack Equine Center for grand opening Nearly 1,000 people packed the Equine Center during its grand opening event on Oct. 15. The festivities began at 2 p.m. with a procession led by the Ames Farm six-percheron horse hitch, which broke a ribbon to enter the Equine Center’s indoor arena. Speakers included Governor Tim Pawlenty, University of Minnesota President Robert Bruininks, Interim Dean Trevor Ames, and Dr. Stephanie Valberg, Equine Center director, who delighted the crowd by beginning her remarks with one word: "Woohoo!"
The facility was named in honor of Louise and Doug Leatherdale of Medina, who made a generous lead gift to the University of Minnesota. Tad and Cindy Piper of Long Lake made the lead gift for the Piper Performance Clinic, a performance medicine and reproductive clinic in the facility.

From 2:30 to 4:30 p.m., equine clinic staff demonstrated the new high-tech systems in the 60,000-square-foot facility. Members of the We Can Ride therapeutic riding group were also on hand to demonstrate their program, which teaches riding and carriage driving to children and adults living with cognitive and physical disabilities. The new facility will be home to the first metro site of this popular program. For more information, see the College's news release.
Pomeroy Center grand opening is Friday
A grand opening celebration for the Ben Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center is scheduled for 4-6 p.m. Friday. Dr. Carl Osborne will be the master of ceremonies, Dr. Walter Mackey, Dr. Glen Nelson, Dr. Dale Sorenson, and Dr. Charles Muscoplat will reminisce about 60 years of College history, and special guests will include former dean Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, Minnesota Senator and veterinarian Steve Dille, and the Pomeroy family.
Community Fund Drive underway
The University's annual Community Fund drive began Oct. 1 and continues through Oct. 31. This year's goal is a participation rate of 40 percent and a total of $1.25 million for state charities. As of week two, the University had received 1,720 pledges totaling over $491,000. Of that total, 16 pledges totaling $9,056 were from CVM faculty and staff. The participation rate for CVM employees was 3 percent, compared to 11 percent university-wide. For more information and to make a pledge online, go to Minnesota charities count on U. Everyone who sends in their pledge form or signs up online is entered into a drawing for weekly prizes and grand prizes.
Library open house is Oct. 30
The Veterinary Medical Library open house is only a week away (October 30)! Come investigate library resources, consult library staff and get your questions answered, enjoy free refreshments and giveaways, and win fabulous prizes, including t-shirts, gift certificates, a printer, books, tickets to sporting and entertainment events, and more. The library invites you to investigate the evidence by participating in the LSI: Library Scene Investigation online contest. By doing so, you'll be entered for a special grand prize drawing. To participate, start here: www.vetmed.lib.umn.edu/news/openhouse/2007 The LSI: Library Scene Investigation online contest is only for current University of Minnesota students, staff, and faculty.
Alpha Psi offers candygrams
Do you want to brighten someone's Halloween with candy? Then don't miss the Alpha Psi candygram sale, taking place this week outside 125/135 Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine. Alpha Psi will be selling candygrams on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday over the lunch hour. Candygrams are $2 per bag or three for $5 and will be delivered to recipients on Halloween.
Housing sought for Brazilian exchange students
Need a little excitement in your life? Want to make a difference? Have an extra bedroom? Host a visiting student!
In January, the College of Veterinary Medicine is expecting three students from Brazil as part of the FIPSE (Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education) program, an exchange program through which the College sends three students to Brazil each summer. The Brazilian students will spend spring semester participating in research at the College.
The College is seeking housing (rooms at a moderate price) for these students for spring semester. The host families from previous years say that this was a great experience for them, as did CVM students who stayed in Brazil this past summer. If you are interested or know of any housing possibilities, contact Bert Stromberg at 625-7008 or b-stro@umn.edu by October 29.
