MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL (July 14, 2005) - Dr. Carl Osborne, a professor at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, will be presented with the first Robert R. Shomer Award for Outstanding Achievement in Veterinary Medical Ethics at the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) convention at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

“Dr. Osborne is an outstanding individual who has had a distinguished career as a leader in the field of veterinary medical ethics through scholarship, advocacy, and mentorship,” said Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine. “Throughout his career as a researcher, teacher, and scholar, he has contributed enormously to the veterinary profession.”

“His philosophies regarding one’s sense of compassion, ethical behavior, animal welfare, and humane treatment of animals were integral to his teachings,” added David Antenucci, a 2005 graduate of the College.

The award presentation will take place following an ethics session at the AVMA convention. In addition to Klausner, Drs. Bonnie Beaver, president of the AVMA, Patricia Olson, executive director of the Morris Animal Foundation, Sherry Sanderson of the University of Georgia, and University of Minnesota colleagues Robert J. Washabau, chair of the Veterinary Clinical Sciences department, Jody Lulich, professor, and Sheri Ross, assistant clinical professor, will pay tribute to Dr. Osborne’s achievements.
