Boomer
St. Paul police dog receives care at University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center
Just after 6 p.m. on Monday, April 6, three St. Paul police officers and Boomer, a St. Paul police dog, responded to a compliant in the Eastern District. The complaint stated that a man in possession of a handgun was sitting in an alley, drinking.
Shortly after police responded to the complaint, gunfire broke out, and Boomer was shot in the muzzle. Bleeding heavily, he was rushed to the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and a blood transfusion.
Boomer’s handler, St. Paul police officer Pat Murphy, stated that Boomer received great care while at the University. Murphy, who has handled Boomer for the last four years, was especially grateful that the University doctors and staff allowed him to be involved during the treatment. Interaction between Murphy and Boomer was particularly important during the process since trained police dogs can have different reactions in stressful situations. After undergoing another surgery on Wednesday to remove shattered bone, tooth, and lead, Boomer is expected to return home and have a healthy recovery.

About Boomer
Officer Patrick Murphy's partner, Boomer, was one of Animal Planet’s “K-9 Cops.” A black and tan German shepherd dog, Boomer was born in Holland and bought with donations given to the St. Paul Police Canine Foundation. Boomer is a patrol dog trained to use his nose to find people and evidence. When he is not working, he comes home with Officer Murphy and lives at his house. When at home, Boomer likes to run and play with his favorite toy, a Kong.
