Large Animal Hospital treats baby giraffe from Como Zoo

CVM Micky Trent and Giraffe

In the wee hours of Tuesday, May 5, a male baby giraffe weighing in at 152 pounds was born at Como Zoo. Zookeepers and veterinarians had expected the giraffe to be born sometime in July, but with a 15-month gestation period for giraffes, it's not always easy to get a precise birth date. The young giraffe had some major health complications, but thanks to the outstanding care of the staff at Como Zoo and veterinarians at the University of Minnesota College Of Veterinary Medicine, the giraffe is now standing tall at 5 feet 9 inches and making tremendous progress.
