Background
George Mather received his veterinary degree from Iowa State in 1935, subsequently serving as Chief Veterinarian for the Boston Animal Rescue League as well as conducting practice in nearby Hingham, Massachusetts.  In 1948 he was recruited by the University of Minnesota to join the faculty of the newly organized School of Veterinary Medicine.  While developing a small animal clinical teaching curriculum; he also pursued graduate training and received his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota in 1951.  Dr. Mather was integral in the inception of the graduate training in clinical medicine that thrives at the University today.

Dr. Mather, a pioneer in small animal geriatrics and pediatrics, was also recognized as an international authority on toxicological disease of companion animals.  While at the University of Minnesota, he developed additional keen interests in nutrition, dermatology and ophthalmology.  He was a well known author, popular speaker and host to two educational TV programs on canine and feline medicine.  In 1979, George Mather retired after 31 years of excellent service to the veterinary community.  At the time of his retirement, the Governor of Minnesota declared May 22, 1979 Dr. George Mather Day.  He died on April 3, 1990.

All those who knew George recognized that his major contributions to mankind went far beyond teaching, research and service to veterinary medicine.  He steadfastly provided all with an example of kindness, compassion, concern, loyalty, honesty, determination, and unselfishness.

The Mather Lecture Series was developed to honor this worthy individual. The series provides useful and progressive information intended to be incorporated into private sector patient care delivery systems. The information is evidence-based and unbiased.
