INTERNS

Dr. Amy Highbarger DVM, Kansas State University

Dr. Highbarger is a native of Kansas and earned both her Bachelor and DVM degrees from Kansas State University. She has done internship training in Texas at a private equine practice as well as in Oklahoma with food animals at the college of veterinary medicine. Her primary area of interest lies with lameness, orthopedics and sports medicine and she hopes to follow her internship with a residency in equine surgery. In her free time she enjoys western riding to improve her skills whenever an opportunity arises, following western disciplines such as reining, cutting and working cow horse competitions, and keeping up with college football.

Dr. Rolf Modesto DVM, Brazil

After graduation, Dr. Modesto trained in Large Animal Surgery at Sao Paulo State University in Brazil and for the past year has been an intern at Brazos Valley Equine Hospital in Texas. His interests include lameness, podiatry and colics. After his internship, Dr. Modesto hopes to pursue a residency in Large Animal Surgery. When at home, he likes to ride on the beach with friends and practice the Brazilian version of calf roping. However, he figures his 3 Arabians are probably wild by now with no one to work with them for the past several years!

Dr. Raffaella Teixeira DVM, Sao Paulo State University, Brazil

Dr. Teixeira completed a medicine residency at Sao Paulo State University, followed by training at Hagyards, Davidson and McGee in Kentucky. Her main interests include neonatology, neurology, respiratory disorders and intensive care medicine. She hopes to follow her internship with a residency in equine medicine. She has 10 years of show jumping experience and misses the Warmblood she had to sell when she started her residency. She hopes to buy another horse and return to jumping as soon as possible.

RESIDENTS IN EQUINE AMBULATORY SERVICE

Dr. Sara Wefel DVM, University of Minnesota

Dr. Wefel completed an internship in equine private practice at Wisconsin Equine. She is interested in ambulatory practice and hopes to obtain boards in equine practice. She is a life long horse owner and enthusiast, with experience in 4-H, hunter pleasure, hunter/jumper, western pleasure, and dressage. She is particularly interested in dentistry, internal medicine and complementary care (acupuncture and chiropractic). She currently owns five horses: an Arabian, a half-Arabian, a Miniature horse, and two Belgians.

RESIDENTS IN SURGERY

Dr. Mary Boyce DVM, Ross University

Dr. Boyce completed internships at Colorado State University and Chino Valley Equine Hospital. Her interests include lameness and orthopedic surgery. After her surgery residency, she plans to pursue a PhD in equine orthopedic research. Dr. Boyce trained and competed Grand Prix jumpers for 10 years prior to veterinary school and now relaxes by riding her show jumper, Loki.

Dr. Anne Nicholson DVM, North Carolina State University

Dr. Nicholson completed an internship at the University of Georgia. Her interests include minimally invasive surgery and emergency and critical care. Dr. Nicolson showed dressage and combined training prior to veterinary school and now rides her Hanoverians, Madeline and Harvey, for showing in dressage and pleasure.

Dr. Megan Swaab DVM, University of Wisconsin

Dr. Swaab completed an internship in equine private practice at Wisconsin Equine. She became particularly interested in orthopedic research after her horse required arthroscopic surgery. She showed quarter horses as a kid and was quite active in youth events. She would love to get back into riding more often and is open to a change in discipline! Although horses are her main focus, she also has a soft spot for dairy cows and her cat, Ellie.
