Research Interests
The gastrointestinal tract is a major portal of entry into the body for pathogenic bacteria. The mucosal immune system in the small intestine consists of organized secondary lymphoid organs called Peyer's patches. I study the host response to Salmonella by the Peyer's patches of the pig. So far, porcine immune responses to pathogenic bacteria have not been well characterized at a molecular level. I use an ex vivo technique to infect Peyer's patches, and then measure the resulting changes in gene expression by DNA microarray analysis (PorkChip) and real time RT-PCR. I hope to expand knowledge of innate mucosal immune responses in pigs so that others can use this information to develop mucosal vaccines.
