Ribbon cut for new Biosafety Level 3 necropsy facility
A standing-room-only crowd packed 280 Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory on Jan. 10 for a dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the VDL's new BSL-3 necropsy facility. The $2.44 million project will help the state immediately respond to outbreaks of diseases that could potentially spread from animals to people -- including the highly lethal form of bird flu, should it ever hit here.

Speakers at the event included Dr. Trevor Ames, interim dean, Dr. Frank Cerra, senior vice president of health sciences, Dr. Jim Collins, director of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, Senator Steve Dille, Dr. Bill Hartmann, state veterinarian and director of the Minnesota Board of Animal Health, Rep. Alice Hausman, and Gene Hugoson, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture.

Dean candidate interviews continue
Two candidates for the position of dean of the College, Dr. Robert Washabau and Dr. D. Paul Lunn, were interviewed last week. Interviews continue this week, with Dr. Douglas Freeman visiting the College today and tomorrow and Dr. Howard Gelberg here Tuesday through Thursday. Dr. Trevor Ames will be interviewed Jan. 29-31. Seminar and reception times will be published in CVM This Week (see the calendar below) and distributed via e-mail.

Veterinary Medical Library news
University Libraries to migrate to OvidSP on Tuesday
OVID Technologies, the University Libraries platform citation databases like MEDLINE, BIOSIS, and PsycINFO, is making a major change to its search interface, called OvidSP. The University Libraries will be migrating to OvidSP on the morning of Tuesday, January 15.

This new user interface features multiple search modes with classic features such as term "Mapping," "Explode," and "Scope Notes" carried over in the Ovid Syntax mode, while the Basic mode uses natural language searching, which allows for searching across databases. Users will also notice an improved results display.

One of the major changes is that users will now need to create "personal accounts" in order to save searches or create AutoAlerts. On the day of the migration, current Ovid users with saved searches or AutoAlert SDIs will receive an Ovid system-generated e-mail with their user names and temporary passwords to access their saved content.  New users wishing to save their searches or customize the user interface will have to create a new user account.

Try OvidSP, which can be previewed in the current interface, and if you have questions or difficulties with the new OvidSP, contact Andre Nault at 4-5376 or naulta@umn.edu

One-minute preceptor to be topic of Jan. 25 CVM Seminar on Teaching
How do you teach students clinical reasoning skills efficiently in a real-time clinical setting? Most clinical teaching takes place in a setting where time is at a premium. The five microskills of the One Minute Preceptor teaching model enable teachers to effectively assess, instruct, and provide feedback more efficiently. Don't miss the the CVM Seminar on Teaching, "One Minute Preceptor," to be led by Drs. Karyn Baum and JoAnn Wood of the Medical School on Friday, Jan. 25, from noon-1 p.m. in 213 Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center. Refreshments will be served.

A friendly reminder--
Reservations needed for VCS conference room

Do you need to use the VCS conference room? Remember, scheduling of the conference room, C308, must be done through the VCS office by calling 5-7744.  The staff is not able to review proposals sent through Meeting Maker, so any room reservations requested this way will not be placed on the room reservation calendar.
