Last dean candidate interview is this week; three presentations now online

Dr. Paul Lunn withdraws
The search committee was informed that due to recent changes in his family's circumstances, Dr. Paul Lunn has withdrawn his candidacy for further consideration. Dr. Lunn said that he was positively impressed with the College and the University and thought the College was well-positioned to advance its programs and expand its role in the veterinary and biomedical community in this country and worldwide.
College well-represented at NAVC
CVM faculty presenters at the North American Veterinary Conference (NAVC) in Orlando Jan. 19-23 included Jane Armstrong, Jody Lulich, Molly McCue, Paul Rapnicki, Jerry Torrison, Troy Trumble, Stephanie Valberg, and Robert Washabau. Topics included joint, liver, and postpartum disease, muscle and genetic disorders, circovirus, colitis, equine nutraceuticals, and more. On Jan. 19, the College hosted an alumni reception and a donor reception featuring Julia Ponder, executive director of The Raptor Center, and Juneau, a peregrine falcon.
Annual State of the Academic Health Center Address is Friday
The annual State of the Academic Health Center address, "Fulfilling the Vision: Breaking New Ground," by Frank B. Cerra, M.D., senior vice president for health sciences, is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 31, from 3-4 p.m. in Mayo Auditorium. The address will be preceded by the Academic Health Center Faculty Assembly at 2 p.m., and all faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend. Both sessions will be telecast to 280 Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
Going to the MVMA meeting? SCAVMA will provide a bus on Feb. 8
On Friday, Feb. 8, the Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SCAVMA) will be providing a free bus to the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association annual meeting at the Minneapolis Hilton. The bus will depart from outside the Small Animal Hospital on Gortner Ave. starting at 8:30 a.m. and circulate on the hour. The last bus will leave the Minneapolis Hilton at 5:30 p.m. The bus is being provided with sponsorship from Fort Dodge, Bayer, and Intervet.

Graduate student accomplishments
Jennifer Granick has successfully defended her master's thesis, "Anaplasma Phagocytophilum: in Megakaryocytes and Minnesota Dogs." Jennifer was advised by Dr. Jane Armstrong and Dr. Dori Borjesson. She is completing the third year of her internal medicine residency and will be applying to Ph.D. programs in infectious disease. Congratulations, Jennifer!
Lingling Li has successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis, "Complete Genome Sequence and Strain Differentiation of Mycobacterium Avium Subspecies Paratuberculosis." She was advised by Dr. Vivek Kapur. Lingling will be joining Dr. Kapur as a senior research associate at Penn State University's Department of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences. Congratulations, Lingling!
Zhenya Ni has successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis, "Characterization of a Subdivision of Skin Homing T Cells Based on P-selectin Binding." Zhenya's advisor is Dr. Bruce Walcheck. She is currently pursuing post-doc opportunities. Congratulations, Zhenya!
New Biosafety Level 3 lab on KSTP TV
On Jan. 24, KSTP TV's Eyewitness News aired a story in which the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory's new Biosafety Level 3 lab was highlighted. The BSL 3 facility is one of only three labs nationwide that can examine the bodies of birds infected with bird flu without endangering the lives of its researchers.

U moves up in research expenditure rankings
The University of Minnesota has moved from 10th to 9th among public universities in research expenditures. At the Board of Regents meeting last month, vice president for research Tim Mulcahy reported that the U had $595 million in research expenditures in 2006, up from $549 million in 2005. The increase represents the second-highest growth rate among top public universities. Mulcahy talks about why those numbers are important in "Research on the Rise."

Female Samoyed
Sierra, a 4 1/2-year-old female Samoyed, needs a new home because her owner passed away. She is smart and friendly, but has not lived with children or other pets. She weighs about 65 pounds and has not been spayed. Contact: Bill Wojcik, 612-781-3004.
