Dr. Julia Ponder named executive director of The Raptor Center

Dr. Julia Ponder
The College of Veterinary Medicine has named Julia Ponder, D.V.M., as executive director of The Raptor Center (TRC). Ponder succeeds TRC cofounder Patrick T. Redig, D.V.M., Ph.D., a College professor who remains at TRC in a research, teaching, and advisory capacity. The director of TRC for 21 years, Dr. Redig will now take a permanent seat on The Raptor Center’s board of directors and serve as liaison between the center and his extensive network of national and international contacts.

A graduate of Texas A&M University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Ponder practiced small animal medicine in the Dallas area for 14 years before moving to Minnesota in 1998. She originally joined The Raptor Center as a volunteer, working three mornings a week as a veterinarian in the center’s clinic. She became staff veterinarian in 2002 and interim associate director in 2005.

As executive director, Dr. Ponder will be responsible for the strategic direction and overall operations of TRC, providing organizational leadership with an emphasis on growth through fund raising, educational sponsorships, research grants, endowments, marketing, operations, and cost management.

“I am excited about leading an organization with a mission as compelling as The Raptor Center's,” she said. “I look forward to building on its strong reputation and creating an enduring program that is focused on raptors, based on science, and effective in addressing environmental issues facing our world in the years to come.”

“Juli did an excellent job as interim associate director,” says Jeffrey S. Klausner, dean. “Her extensive background at The Raptor Center and in veterinary medicine will be a great asset in her new position as executive director.”

U of M tech transfer program reorganized
The U of M's technology transfer program has been reorganized to reinvigorate commercialization of U research. Patents and Technology Marketing (PTM) and the Office of Business Development (OBD) have been reorganized into the Office for Technology Commercialization (OTC). OTC oversees all aspects of technology commercialization at the U through its twin centers: the Licensing Center (formerly PTM), which manages patent and licensing functions, and the Venture Center (formerly OBD), which assists in the creation of U-based startups. Both functions have been consolidated at OTC's new location in University Enterprise Laboratories in St. Paul. For more information, contact umotc@umn.edu or 612-624-0550 or go to  http://www.research.umn.edu/techcomm.

Need a home (top)

Blood donor needs a foster home
The Veterinary Medical Center has a small number of dogs and cats that live in the hospital and provide life-saving blood products for patients. Rescued from area shelters, these in-house donors are young, healthy, fully vaccinated, neutered, temperament-tested animals that donate blood about once a month and serve as blood donors for about two years years. While they are blood donors, they are “owned” by the Companion Animal Blood Donor program, which takes care of minor medical problems they may have while in foster care. Foster parents are needed to provide them a loving, safe, home while they are donors and bring them back once a month for blood donation. The foster family is then the first on the list to be able to adopt them permanently.

Chili

This blood donor needs a foster home:

Chili, a neutered male black lab/husky cross, 3-4 years old, with one blue and one brown eye. Smart and sweet, he  likes to run and play ball, but is a bit shy. He came from the Crossroads Animal Shelter.

If you can provide a foster home for Chili, please contact Dora or Beth at 612-625-9726, extension 2, and leave a message or stop by the Intensive Care Unit.
