Tapir visits VMC for MRI
A Malayan tapir from the Minnesota Zoo was one of the more unusual patients at the Veterinary Medical Center in recent months. She had a swelling on her right mandible and was brought to the VMC for an MRI on March 26.

"Radiographs were suggestive of root infection of one or more teeth, but were not diagnostic enough to guide treatment," explained Dr. Micky Trent. "The MRI gave us more complete and detailed information, and we were able to eliminate the teeth as the source of the swelling."

Veterinary Medical Center introduces Advanced Veterinary Imaging Direct
The Veterinary Medical Center has launched Advanced Veterinary Imaging Direct (AVID), a new outpatient medical imaging service. The service will provide veterinarians with the most advanced veterinary imaging technology in the nation, with consultation and interpretation provided by the VMC's team of experienced radiologists. Practitioners can call 612-624-9583 for more information. A request form is online at www.vmc.umn.edu/avid/request/request.cfm

Veterinary Medical Library news

RefWorks enhanced with attachments option
RefWorks has activated the attachments option for all University of Minnesota RefWorks accounts. The attachment feature enables users to attach files to their references in their personal database, much like attaching files to an e-mail message. The incorporation of this feature allows users to upload files to existing references stored within their RefWorks database. With this feature, RefWorks users can instantly save and retrieve all forms of data within their database, including BMP, TIF, JPG, PNG, GIF, PDF, and more.

RefWorks is now providing unlimited storage space for attachments for subscribing organizations. Although RefWorks will provide unlimited storage space at the organization level, some limitations have been set at the user account level.

For a brief instructional preview, go to www.refworks.com/tutorial/Attachment%20Preview.htm

A RefWorks Attachments FAQ is available at
    http://www.refworks.com/content/products/attachment/faqs.asp

If you would like a tutorial on RefWorks, e-mail naulta@umn.edu

Public Engagement Day is April 22
The University of Minnesota's Public Engagement Day will be held on Tuesday, April 22, at Coffman Memorial Union in Minneapolis. Public Engagement Day is a University-wide event that provides an opportunity for faculty, staff, and students to share and learn about the many dimensions of public engagement across the University. Workshops, panel presentations, and group discussions provide a forum for faculty, staff, students, administrators, and community partners to come together and celebrate the University's collaborative work in meeting the land-grant mission of the University of Minnesota.

Public Engagement day will offer a wide range of activities and offerings that will explore the ways in which public engagement is being integrated into the University's research, teaching, and service activities. It will spotlight the people and partnerships that are helping to make the University of Minnesota one of the top three engaged research universities in the world and honor the individuals who have made a positive difference in the community. For registration and other information about Public Engagement Day, go to
http://www.engagement.umn.edu/public_engagement_day/ or call Michelle Kuhl at the Office for Public Engagement at 624-1562.

MeetingMaker upgrade coming April 26-27
AHC Information Systems will install a MeetingMaker upgrade over the weekend of April 26 and 27. When users start MeetingMaker on April 28, it will be a new version. Highlights of the upgrade:

Jane Goodall to present public lecture
In addition to the College's commencement address, renowned primatologist Jane Goodall will present a public lecture on
May 3 from 11 a.m.-noon at Mayo Memorial Auditorium on the Minneapolis campus. Admission is free, the lecture is open to the public, and no reservations are required. To learn more about Jane Goodall and her work, go to www.janegoodall.org/

Best Practices Institute set for May 20-21
Registration is now open for the third annual Best Practices Institute on May 20-21.
The institute will feature presentations by education leaders from Academic Health Center schools and colleges, as well as a national keynote speaker. The two-day program will provide opportunities for skill-building in small groups and sharing of ideas among faculty who teach in the health professions.

Dr. Laura Molgaard, associate dean for Academic and Student Affairs, recommends that CVM faculty register for the institute. She is drawing faculty's attention to "The Impact of Media Culture on Academic Achievement and Global Competitiveness," a talk by Dr. David Walsh scheduled for May 20 from 3:15-4:30 p.m.

"Dr. Walsh makes a very compelling argument that the majority of the students who are in our classes and in our applicant pool are from the 'Media Generation' of 'more, easy, fast, and fun,' and that this has an impact on their attitudes and abilities, including their work ethic," she says. For more information about the Best Practices Institute and to register, go to http://www.bpinstitute.umn.edu/. All courses will be held in Moos Tower and Weaver Densford Hall on the Minneapolis campus.

Responsible animal lover wanted
A St. Paul couple is looking for a responsible animal lover to take care of their pets and house while they are on vacation. They have two dogs and two cats. In addition to the regular pet needs (food, fresh water, daily walks for the dogs and snuggles) one of the cats requires injections every other day. This cat is a bit leery of strangers and requires someone gentle and adept at working with cats. To learn more about this opportunity, contact Nan Langevin and Brad Muller at nlangevin@bwbr.com
