Candidates for associate dean for graduate programs to present seminars
Three finalists for the postion of associate dean for graduate programs will present seminars entitled "Vision for Graduate Programs at the CVM" at the following times:

 Faculty, staff, and students are invited to attend. Copies of each candidate's curriculum vitae and evaluation forms will be available in the dean's office and the office of Student and Academic Affairs.


University Senate election underway
The University Senate election continues today through May 23 at 4:30 p.m. The candidates include Rod DeVrient, personel specialist at the CVM.  An electronic ballot is available on the Web at http://cselection.umn.edu/ . An X.500 and password are required to enter the election. This information will also direct you to the specific ballot for your area of representation.

Bovine TB legislation signed into law
On May 5,
Governor Tim Pawlenty signed a bill that will expand the state's capacity for bovine tuberculosis control and eradication efforts. The Minnesota Bureau of Animal Health will increase livestock testing, tighten restrictions on animal movement, provide cost-share assistance for fencing in certain areas, and offer a buy out option to livestock owners in the disease management zone. FYI: veterinary chiropractic training courses
The Minnesota House recently passed an Agriculture Policy bill that allows chiropractors to work on animals if they receive training and have a referral from a veterinarian. But where does a chiropractor or veterinarian obtain veterinary chiropractic training? FYI. . .


Upcoming opportunities

Best Practices Institute to focus on advancing critical thinking
Registration closes today
for the third annual Best Practices Institute: Advancing Critical Thinking in the Health Professions, to be held on May 20-21. The institute will feature presentations by education leaders from Academic Health Center schools and colleges -- including the CVM's own Drs. Julie Churchill, Peggy Root Kustritz, Rebecca McComas, Laura Molgaard, Tom Molitor, Roberto Novo, Liz Pluhar, Micky Trent, and Deborah Wingert -- as well as a national keynote speaker. The two-day program will provide opportunities for skill-building in small groups and sharing of ideas among faculty who teach in the health professions. There is no charge.

St. Paul campus reunion planned for June 26
A St. Paul campus reunion is planned for Thursday, June 26, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. For more information, go to

Teaching Enrichment Series scheduled for August 25-27
Mark your calendar:
The 2008 Teaching Enrichment Series workshops will be conducted on August 25-27 and the new TA orientation will be held on August 28.

Dr. Julia Ponder quoted by Associated Press, CNN, WCTV-Tallahassee about 'bionic beak'
The Associated Press, CNN, Houston Chronicle, and WCTV-Tallahassee quoted Dr. Julia Ponder, executive director of The Raptor Center, in May 6-7 stories about a bald eagle being fitted with an artifical beak in Idaho.

Ian Rubinoff receives student leadership award
Ian Rubinoff, class of 2009, was one of 42 University of Minnesota students honored by President Robert Bruininks at this year’s President’s Student Leadership and Service Awards Banquet on May 5. Ian was recognized for his leadership to the Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association ( SCAVMA) during the 2007-08 academic year. Students are nominated by faculty, staff, and peers, and recipients are selected by a University-wide committee. The event is hosted by the Office of the President and the University of Minnesota Alumni Association.

Comparative Pathology Shared Resource available to CVM investigators
Did you know that t
he Comparative Pathology Shared Resource of the Masonic Cancer Center and Veterinary Population Medicine Department is fully staffed and available for use by CVM investigators? Located in 224 Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine, this resource provides full pathology support -- from preparation of histological sections (routine sections from frozen and formalin fixed animal tissues; detection of common cell antigens by immunohistochemistry; development of new immunohistochemical protocols) to pathology interpretation services (project design; gross and histological tissue assessments; digital imaging; morphometry; assistance with manuscript preparation) -- by board-certified veterinary pathologists. It is led by CVM Professor Cathy Carlson, D.V.M., Ph.D. For more information, go to   www.cancer.umn.edu/research/cores/comppath/index.html

Dr. Lisa Reiter still needs the following healthy dogs. If you know anyone who has a dog that matches one on the list, please contact Dr Reiter in Dermatology at 612-626-4295, 651-366-0005, or reite052@umn.edu. She is willing to go off-site to obtain her samples if that is more convenient for the owner.

Greyhounds need foster homes
The Veterinary Medical Center's companion animal blood donor program has two greyhound blood donors available for foster care. Both dogs were acquired from a rescue organization in Kansas, and they cannot be placed in homes with cats. If you are interested in fostering either of these dogs or have questions, e-mail Beth Olmstead or Dora Schroeder.
