College news (top)

Faculty, staff, and students participate in AVMA conference
College faculty, staff, and students gathered in Washington, D.C., July 15-19 for the annual conference of the American Veterinary Medical Association. Activities included--

Alumni reception
Interim Dean Trevor Ames, Stephanie Pommier, development officer, Jan Swanson, continuing education director, and Jan Williams, communications director, hosted a reception where more than 150 alumni gathered to socialize and hear the latest news about the College. 

Congressional visits
Congressional visits were conducted by Interim Dean Ames, Dr. Dick Isaacson, chair of the Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Department, Ian Rubinoff, SCAVMA president, Dr. Bert Stromberg, associate dean for research and graduate programs, Jan Williams, communications director, to promote the passage of the Veterinary Public Health Workforce Expansion Act, ask for additional funding for the National Veterinary Medical Service Act, and update congressional members and staff about College programs and faculty.

Conference presentations
Numerous faculty members participated in conference presentations, which enhanced the reputation and raised the visibility of the College at the national level. A number of students also joined the meeting activities.

Public Service Award
Dr. Mike Pullen,
professor emeritus, received the AVMA Public Service Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to public health and regulatory veterinary medicine. Dr. Pullen is recognized as one of the founders of the veterinary public health program at the University of Minnesota.

Elections and appointments
Jan Williams was re-elected to the board of the Association for Advancement of Veterinary Professionals (AVAP) as secretary. Jan Swanson was newly elected as a member-at-large. 

Jan Williams was also appointed to the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC) Advancement Committee, a group of deans and advancement professionals who raise awareness of the importance of advancement, coordinate advancement efforts, provide counsel and expertise to the AAVMC board of directors, serve as a liaison between the AVAP (a group of veterinary advancement professionals) and the AAVMC, facilitate coordinated communication, public relations, and government-relations strategies across the colleges, and coordinate learning opportunities for deans, hospital directors, and associate deans on advancement activities. Former dean Jeffrey Klausner chairs the committee.


Veterinary Public Health Workforce Expansion Act passed
In a 95-0 vote, the U.S. Senate passed the Higher Education Authorization bill, which includes special provisions and funding for veterinary schools to expand the number of students in public health programs and the veterinary workforce in general. Canterbury Park pledges $100,000 to Equine Center
Canterbury Park President Randy Sampson announced July 21 that the Canterbury Park Minnesota Fund has pledged $100,000 to the new Equine Center. The Brian Barenscheer Foundation has also pledged $850,000. Barenscheer served as a member of the Canterbury Park board of directors from 1995 until his death in 2004. The Curtis Sampson family also pledged $100,000. Sampson is the Canterbury Park chairman of the board.

University of Minnesota President Bob Bruininks, along with Dr. Trevor Ames, interim dean, and Dr. Stephanie Valberg, director of the Equine Center, attended the check presentation ceremony.

The Equine Center is scheduled to open in October. A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for October 15 at 2 p.m.


New facilities manager hired
Tim Gordon
will be joining the College on August 6 to replace Ed Kosciolek, who retired in June. Tim comes from University of Minnesota Facilities Management with many years of facilities experience. His current role is operations supervisor supporting the St. Paul Campus zone -- which includes the CVM -- so he is very knowledgeable of our facilities, programs, faculty, and staff. Tim will be located in 404 VMC and can be contaced at 625-1960 or gord014@umn.edu.

Chemical cleanup day planned for August 13
The CVM Safety Committee and the Department of Environmental Health & Safety will sponsor a chemical cleanup day on August 13 from 9 a.m. to noon in 210 Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. It is expected that many outdated or unused chemicals will be discovered while staff are doing their required chemical inventories. This will be a perfect time to properly dispose of them. AHC/IS information session is Thursday

Information Systems staff will cover these topics and answer your questions in a brown bag lunch information session on Thursday from noon to 1 p.m. in 125 Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine. Feel free to bring your lunch. No registration is necessary. Just show up!


Burnout and Depression in the Workplace to be subject of Friday seminar
Jeannine Moga
of Social Work Services will discuss "Burnout and Depression in the Workplace" on Friday, Aug. 3, from noon-1 p.m. in 280 Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Beverages and snacks will be provided.

Program taped at family violence/animal abuse conference to air Saturday
"Pets Caught in the Crossfire of Family Violence," a program taped at the March Building a Bridge of Hope: Interdisciplinary Conference on Family Violence and Animal Abuse will air on Twin Cities Public Television (Channel 17) on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 8 p.m. the program will include interviews with Dr. Jeff Klausner and many of the speakers at the conference.

New animal behavior Web site
ABRIonline.org is a new Web site from Animal Behavior Resources Institute Inc., a nonprofit organization whose founder and chairman is veterinary behaviorist Dr. R.K. Anderson. A retired U of M professor, Dr. Anderson is the director of CENSHARE (Center to Study Human-Animal Relationships and Environments) and the recipient of the ASPCA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Shaun Kennedy testifies at Washington, D.C., hearing
Shaun Kennedy,
deputy director of the National Center for Food Protection and Defense and director of partnerships and external relations at the College, testified at the hearing "Federal Efforts to Mitigate Vulnerabilities in the Food Supply Chain" before the Subcommittee on Emerging Threats, Cybersecurity, and Science and Technology in Washington, D.C., on July 24. Dr. Margueritte Pappaioanou named to AVMA One Health Initiative task force
Margueritte Pappaioanou, D.V.M., Ph.D.,
a professor of infectious disease epidemiology at the School of Public Health, has been appointed to the American Veterinary Medical Association's One Health Initiative Task Force. She will join 12 other members of the animal and human medical communities to lead a national effort in strengthening the relationship between animal and human medicine. Ava Redig, class of 2010, has been selected to serve a one-year term as treasurer of the Veterinary Business Management Association. She is one of only five students nationwide to be selected to serve on the board for next year. Congratulations, Ava!

New associate vice president for research administration at U of M
Pamela Webb has joined the University of Minnesota as the new associate vice president for research administration and director of Sponsored Projects Administration (SPA). Webb comes to the University of Minnesota from Stanford University, where she served as senior director for the Office of Sponsored Research, supporting approximately $975 million in research expenditures annually. She replaces Ed Wink, who is retiring at the end of the year. Two yellow labs
Harley and Deuce are 3- and 4-year-old yellow labs who need a home together. The owners' new baby has developed a severe allergy to them, and the owners are devastated. Both are neutered, have their shots, are house trained, and get along with kids, cats, and other dogs. Harley takes anti-seizure meds ($10 per month) with no problems. They are playful and easygoing. Bailey
