College represented at Minnesota State Fair
CVM faculty, staff, students, and volunteers are involved in a variety of activities at the Minnesota State Fair, from the Miracle of Birth Center and Surgery Suite to presentations in the University of Minnesota building.
On Aug. 23, Dr. Julie Churchill, Dr. Donnelle Hansen, Kim Horne, Michelle Miller, Denise Olsson, Helen Pederson, Joan Smith, and Jan Williams conducted educational presentations and staffed a daylong exhibit at the Academic Health Center booth in the University of Minnesota building.
This week, representatives of The Raptor Center will present a number of programs on the main stage at the DNR Building and host Bald Eagle Recovery Day on Friday. Starting at 10:30 a.m. on the DNR Stage, Senator Amy Klobachar will provide a welcome, and Governor Tim Pawlenty will read a proclamation. Other speakers will include Senator Ellen Anderson and TRC cofounder Dr. Pat Redig. Representatives of The Raptor Center will be on hand with live bald eagles. College gears up for arrival of new D.V.M. students
Student orientation starts Wednesday
Ninety new D.V.M. students begin their orientation to the veterinary program on Wednesday with three days of activities.
Kicking off orientation will be a welcome reception and picnic for the incoming class at the Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Hosted by the leadership of the Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SCAVMA), the event is sponsored by Fort Dodge Animal Care.
The student orientation program will include two days of off-campus activities at YMCA Camp St. Croix in Hudson, Wisconsin, where students will be joined by 20 faculty mentors, administrators, and the student leadership of SCAVMA. Known as GOALe (Gopher Orientation and Leadership Experience), the orientation program is modeled after the national Veterinary Leadership Experience sponsored by the American Veterinary Medical Association in June each year. GOALe focuses on self-awareness, leadership potential, and the importance of communication and teamwork skills. Faculty leading the GOALe program are Drs. Julie Churchill, Roberto Novo, and Micky Trent, all of whom attended the “Train the Trainer” program at the national Veterinary Leadership Experience program in June. Dr. Rick DeBowes of Washington State University will be assisting with the leadership training.
The GOALe program is made possible by the support of Hill’s Pet Nutrition, Pfizer Animal Health, and the AVMA Group Health and Life Insurance Trust. Students return to campus for the final portion of their orientation on Friday, Aug. 31.
Welcome breakfast, first day of class is Sept. 4
Classes begin Tuesday, Sept. 4, when Dean Trevor Ames will host a welcome breakfast from 7:15-8:00 a.m. in the lobby of Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine. Faculty and staff are invited to stop by for bagels, orange juice, and coffee.
Welcome-back barbeque is Sept. 7
The annual welcome-back barbeque sponsored by the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association and SCAVMA will be held in the Livestock Pavilion on Friday, Sept. 7, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Food will be served starting at approximately 5 p.m.) Enjoy roasted pork, turkey, lamb and veggie burgers with all the trimmings! Students and their families, graduate students, faculty, residents, interns, and staff are all welcome.

Linear accelerator unveiled
The Veterinary Medical Center's new linear accelerator was officially unveiled at a ribbon-cutting event on Aug. 21. See the College's news release.

Painting lessons for Hercules In preparation for showcasing his artwork at the Equine Center's grand opening on October 15, Hercules is learning a new artistic technique: painting with a brush instead of his hooves. Mary, of ReRun, Inc., a racehorse adoption agency in Kentucky, has worked with many famous horses, including Kentucky Derby winners Funny Cide and Smarty Jones, to develop their painting talents. Bids on previous “Moneighs" have been as high as $6,000 to benefit ReRun, Inc. Hercules’ brushwork paintings will be auctioned at the Equine Center’s grand opening on Oct. 15 at 2 p.m. |

CVM alumna Dr. Heather Case joins AVMA
CVM alumna Dr. Heather Case joined the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Scientific Division on Aug. 13 as assistant director and national coordinator of disaster preparedness and response. Her responsibilities include oversight of the AVMA Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams (VMAT), policy coordination, and education and outreach. She will work with AVMA volunteers, VMAT members, the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, and various government agencies.
Heather received her D.V.M. degree in 1998 and was a postdoctoral fellow, clinical instructor, and veterinary public health resident at the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety. Her experience also includes serving as a member of VMAT-5, where she gained firsthand emergency response skills, and as an AVMA science and technology fellow in the office of Congressman Robert E. Andrews from 2006-2007. She held the position of assistant state veterinarian on the Minnesota State Horse Racing Commission in 2006.

Dana E. Mangi
Dana E. Mangi, an incoming freshman who worked in the Veterinary Medical Center's pharmacy over the summer, died Aug. 19 in Chicago. Dana was from Arlington Heights, Ill., where services were held last week. Memorials may be made to the Anti-Cruelty Society, 157 W. Grand Ave., Chicago, IL 60610 or Susan B. Komen for the Cure, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, TX 75244.
Dr. Mary K. Schlangen
Dr. Mary K. (Palm) Schlangen, class of 1998, died Aug. 10 in Brook Park, Minn., as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident. Mary was a resident of Two Harbors, Minn., and had a husband and two small children. Memorials may be sent to the Mary Schlangen Family Trust Fund, Wells Fargo Bank, 622 1st Avenue, Two Harbors, MN 55616.
