Classes begin today, and Dean Trevor Ames is hosting a welcome breakfast from 7:15-8:00 a.m. in the lobby of Animal Science/Veterinary Medicine. Faculty and staff are invited to stop by for bagels, orange juice, and coffee.
Hayloft open
The Hayloft is now open in the Ben Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center. Hours are 7 a.m to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. It has expanded offerings, including more organic products. Watch for information flyers, coupons, and tasting samples!
CVM made a mark at Minnesota State Fair
College faculty, staff, students, and volunteers were involved in a variety of activities at this year's Minnesota State Fair, from the Miracle of Birth Center and Surgery Suite to presentations in the DNR and University of Minnesota buildings.
Faculty members (including adjunct faculty) who volunteered at the Miracle of Birth Center included Drs. Trevor Ames, Susan E. Detmer, John Fetrow, James Fountaine, Keith Friendshuh, Sandra Godden, Cassandra Johnson, Barbara Knust, Christina Larson, Robert Morrison, Nicole Neeser, Richard Olson, Paul Rapnicki, Joni Scheftel, Kirk Smith, and Gordon Spronk. Students doing rotations in the Miracle of Birth Center were Kimberly Arello, Jessica Bienapfl, Baruch Caballero, Jacqueline Chaffer, Carin Frenchick, Rachael Roith, Tammy Schilling, Jamie Skime, and Anna Wildgrube.
On Aug. 31, The Raptor Center hosted Bald Eagle Recovery Day, an event featuring Senator Amy Klobachar, Governor Tim Pawlenty, Senator Ellen Anderson, and bald eagles from The Raptor Center. Representatives of TRC also presented programs on the main stage at the DNR Building throughout the week.
On Aug. 23, Dr. Julie Churchill, Dr. Donnelle Hansen, Kim Horne, Michelle Miller, Denise Olsson, Helen Pederson, Joan Smith, and Jan Williams conducted educational presentations and staffed a daylong exhibit at the Academic Health Center booth in the University of Minnesota building.
Mather Lectures start Thursday
"Clinical Use of Pulse Oximetry: Evidence Versus Audience" will be the topic of the Mather Lecture to be presented by Dr. Lynelle Graham and Dr. Ron Mandsager on Thursday from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in 215 Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center. Seminar on intellectual property and patent fundamentals is noon Friday
"Veterinary Medicine and Intellectual Property: Patent Fundamentals" will be the topic of a CVM professional development seminar on Friday from noon to 1 p.m.. Presented by Ann S. Viksnins, a patent attorney at Viksnins, Harris & Padys, PLLP, the seminar will explore--
What is a patent, and how is one obtained?
When and why should researchers seek patent protection?
How does patent protection and technology commercialization support the University's land grant mission?
How have community veterinarians, their clients, and patients benefited from technology the University has patented and commercialized?
Ann Viksnins is a graduate of the University of Minnesota College of Biological Sciences, where she earned a master's degree in genetics, and the University of Minnesota Law School, where she was an editor of the Minnesota Law Review. Ann previously worked at the University of Minnesota Institute for Human Genetics and the BioProcess Technology Institute and the Department of Veterinary Microbiology at Cornell University. She has been practicing intellectual property law since 1992.
Welcome-back barbeque is Friday evening
The annual welcome-back barbeque sponsored by the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association and SCAVMA will be held in the Livestock Pavilion on Friday, Sept. 7, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Food will be served starting at approximately 5 p.m. Enjoy roasted pork, turkey, lamb and veggie burgers with all the trimmings! Students and their families, graduate students, faculty, residents, interns, and staff are all welcome.

Drs. Jennifer Schurrer and Andrea Sotirakopoulos successfully defend master's theses
Dr. Jennifer Schurrer and Dr. Andrea Sotirakopoulos have successfully defended their master's theses.
Jennifer's thesis was "An Assessment of Insects as Regional Vectors of Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome Virus." She was advised by Dr. Scott Dee. Jennifer is currently a small animal veterinarian at Companions Animal Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Her special interests include surgery, nutrition, and internal medicine.
Andrea's thesis was "Evaluation of Microsatellite Instability as a Diagnostic Tool for Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the Lower Urinary tract in Dogs." She was advised by Dr. Elizabeth McNiel. Andrea is moving to California, where she will be an internist at a veterinary specialty hospital in San Diego.
