First Environment Roundtable is today
The first Environment Roundtable hosted by the Institute on the Environment will be held today from 11:45 a.m.-1:00 p.m. in 105 Cargill Building. Entitled "Saving the Planet...One Campus at a Time," the meeting will feature Jacqueline Johnson, Chancellor of University of Minnesota Morris, and Thomas Fisher, Dean of the College of Design, and be facilitated by Deborah Swackhamer, interim director of Institute on the Environment. The meeting is free and open to the public. Sidewalk installation planned
Improvements are planned for the area outside the northwest entrance to the Small Animal Hospital. Sidewalk installation will begin today or tomorrow and be completed before the snow flies. The sidewalk will make the area more accessible to handicapped clients and wagons/gurneys.
Building successful working relationships with leaders to be topic of Friday seminar
Dee Anne Bonebright, a consultant with the Organizational Effectiveness division of Human Resources, will discuss building successful working relationships at a professional development seminar scheduled for Friday at noon in 280 Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Building rapport with peers, your supervisor, and administration is important to a vital and successful career at the U, no matter what position you're in. In this session, participants will look at John Maxwell's nine key principles for building successful working relationships with leaders.
Interfaith Animal Blessing and Memorial Ceremony planned for Saturday
An interfaith animal blessing and memorial ceremony is planned for Saturday from 4:00-6:30 p.m. in the Nestle Purina Memories Garden. Sponsored by the Veterinary Medical Center's Social Work Services program, the interfaith ceremony will involve contributors from multiple faith communities and integrate Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, and Indigenous rituals. The event is free of charge. See the College's media alert.
Department of Emergency Management assembles severe weather tips
The University of Minnesota Department of Emergency Management has assembled some tips for a variety of severe weather scenarios that can be viewed at www.dem.umn.edu/weatherem.html . Instructions on how to take shelter on campus are included.
Participants sought for Alzheimer's study
Participants between the ages of 59 and 87 are being sought for a School of Nursing study of the biological determinants of Alzheimer's disease. The study will involve a telephone call to determine if you qualify to participate and one visit to answer questions, get a physical exam, and have a blood and urine sample collected. Eligible participants will be offered $30 after completion of the study. Contact Dr. Joe Gaugler, School of Nursing, at gaug0015@umn.edu or 612-626-2485.

BitNa Kang successfully defends Ph.D. thesis
BitNa Kang has successfully defended her Ph.D. thesis, "Regulation of CD38 in Airway Myocytes." BitNa's advisor was Dr. Mathur Kannan. BitNa has accepted a post-doctoral position with Dr. Li-Na Wei in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Her current research project is "Regulation of RNA Transport in Neuron." Congratulations, BitNa!

Frankie, a Weimaraner
Frankie, a 3-4-year-old neutered Weimaraner, is a rescue dog available through Northstar Weimaraner Club. Frankie is very sweet and loves to be around people, but he is nervous around other dogs and would probably prefer to be an only dog. He has very good house manners and is house trained.
