Founding fathers dedicate Ben Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center
The College hosted a grand opening and dedication event for the Ben Pomeroy Student-Alumni Learning Center on Friday. After a welcome by Dr. Trevor Ames, interim dean, Dr. Carl Osborne took the stage as master of ceremonies and Dr. Walter Mackey, Dr. Glen Nelson, Dr. Dale Sorensen, and Dr. Charles Muscoplat reminisced about 60 years of College history.
Special guests included former dean Dr. Jeffrey Klausner; Minnesota Senator and veterinarian Steve Dille; Dr. John Arnold, Dr. Carl Jessen, and Dr. Walt Mackey of the Minnesota Veterinary Historical Museum; Tom Boyd, grandson of Willard Boyd, the College's first dean; Liz Branstad, wife of Dr. Goodwin Branstad of the CVM's first graduating class; Dr. Paul Cox of the 1945-46 preveterinary medicine club; Rosemary Finnegan, who was an administrative aid to Dr. Ben Pomeroy; Dr. Tom Haggarty; Dr. David Halvorson, professor and extension veterinarian; Dr. Bee Hanlon, one of the first two women to enter the College in 1948; Theresa A. Leary, the wife of Dr. Robert Leary of the CVM's first graduating class; Dr. Pete Poss of the Minnesota Turkey Growers Association; and several members of the Pomeroy family.
Library open house is Tuesday

Last day of Community Fund Drive is Wednesday
The University's annual Community Fund drive began Oct. 1 and continues through Wednesday, Oct. 31. This year's goal is a participation rate of 40 percent and a total of $1.25 million for state charities. As of week three, the University had received 2,298 pledges totaling over $640,000. Of that total, 22 pledges totaling $12,084 were from CVM faculty and staff. The participation rate for CVM employees was 4 percent, compared to 15 percent university-wide. Bringing research to market will be topic of Friday seminar
"From Lab to Market: The Challenges of Bringing Research to the Public through Technology Commercialization" will be the topic of a professional development seminar to be held on Friday from noon-1 p.m. in 280 Veterinary Diagnosic Laboratory. David L. Provence, Ph.D, patent attorney with Mueting, Raasch & Gebhardt, PA, will discuss the controversies and challenges of commercializing university research, including --
David Provence is a patent attorney practicing in the area of biotechnology, including protein expression and nucleic acid synthesis, agricultural biotechnology, transgenic plants, genetics, structural and functional genomic analysis, microbiology, and general biology. He earned his PhD. in microbiology from Washington University and worked as a post-doctoral research associate in a laboratory at the Washington University School of Medicine before attending law school and earning a J.D. degree from the William Mitchell College of Law.

Buildings affected include VMC south (building #371), VMC north (building #427), and Old VDL (building #385), second and third floors. During this time there will be no fire detection. MVMA seeks abstracts for poster competition
On February 7, the Minnesota Veterinary Medical Association (MVMA) will be hosting a poster competition at its annual convention at the Hilton in downtown Minneapolis. All veterinary and Ph.D. students doing research that contributes to the practice of veterinary medicine are invited to submit abstracts of 250-300 words. Research must have been completed within the past 12 months. Any corporate sponsorship must be disclosed and coauthors named. A first prize of $200 and a second prize of $100 will be awarded. The deadline for submission is November 30. Abstracts should be submitted to Teresa Hershey, MVMA president-elect, at teresahershey@earthlink.net
