Avian Emergency and Critical Care for Technicians, The Raptor Center at the University of Minnesota

This workshop was held on October 14, 2005.

Exciting and new in 2005! This intensive one-day workshop will educate both the novice and experienced technician in specific techniques in avian emergency and critical care.

Morning Program: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

• Introduction: speakers and Raptor Center history
• Environmental needs: temperature, enclosures, substrates, ventilation, sanitation, surroundings
• Nutritional and fluid needs: fluid therapy, tube feeding, dietary recommendations
• Treatments and medications: route, frequency, amount, ability of owner, condition of patient, forms, anesthesia, oxygen, bandaging, splinting, and fixation
• Avian hematology (hands-on): normal and abnormal red and white blood cell morphology, evaluating thrombocytes, blood parasites

Lunch: 12 to 1 p.m.

• Box lunch provided

Afternoon Program: 1 to 5:30 p.m.

• Bandaging workshop (hands-on): figure-8 wing wrap, tape splint, body wrap, ball bandage, interdigit bandage, carpal splint, introduction to thermoplastic and acrylics
• Selected topics: will cover obtaining patient history, assessing patient condition, special treatments or medications, diagnostic testing recommendations, and handling recommendations for the following topics -
  • Egg bound
  • Depressed and/or fluffed patient
  • Malnutrition
  • Trauma
  • Wounds
  • Sneezing/nasal discharge
  • Vomiting/regurgitation
  • Dyspnea
