This workshop was held on October 14, 2005.
Exciting and new in 2005! This intensive one-day workshop will educate both the novice and experienced technician in specific techniques in avian emergency and critical care.
Morning Program: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
- Introduction: speakers and Raptor Center history
- Environmental needs: temperature, enclosures, substrates, ventilation, sanitation, surroundings
- Nutritional and fluid needs: fluid therapy, tube feeding, dietary recommendations
- Treatments and medications: route, frequency, amount, ability of owner, condition of patient, forms, anesthesia, oxygen, bandaging, splinting, and fixation
- Avian hematology (hands-on): normal and abnormal red and white blood cell morphology, evaluating thrombocytes, blood parasites
Lunch: 12 to 1 p.m.
Afternoon Program: 1 to 5:30 p.m.
- Bandaging workshop (hands-on): figure-8 wing wrap, tape splint, body wrap, ball bandage, interdigit bandage, carpal splint, introduction to thermoplastic and acrylics

Selected topics: will cover obtaining patient history, assessing patient condition, special treatments or medications, diagnostic testing recommendations, and handling recommendations for the following topics -
- Egg bound
- Depressed and/or fluffed patient
- Malnutrition
- Trauma
- Wounds
- Sneezing/nasal discharge
- Vomiting/regurgitation
- Dyspnea
