2007 is the Year to Get The Lead Out!

Take advantage of this matching grant opportunity - double your impact and help us combat lead poisoning!

All new and increased gifts from $1 to $999 made to The Raptor Center in the 2007 calendar year will be matched on a 1:1 basis by the Katherine B. Andersen Fund of the St. Paul Foundation.

No new gift or increase is too small when it’s doubled!

With the help of our supporters and this generous matching grant, The Raptor Center can double its impact on many pressing health concerns facing raptors, such as the chronic issue of lead poisoning of bald eagles and other wildlife.

Did you know. . .

  • Lead poisoning afflicts nearly 25 percent of the bald eagles admitted to The Raptor Center’s clinic. The mortality rate is exceedingly high. Less than 10 percent of the lead-poisoned eagles admitted so far this year have survived.
  • As high-velocity rifle bullets pass through animal tissue, they leave a trail of lead, providing a potential lead source for predatory raptors to ingest.
  • Ingesting one or two pieces of lead shot or a fragment of a bullet can be enough to kill a bald eagle.
  • The symptoms of lead poisoning are highly debilitating, and the birds suffer greatly.

This bald eagle is so debilitated by lead poisoning that it can barely stand.
  • The Raptor Center is working to determine the source of lead poisoning in our patients through recovery and assay of lead fragments from sick eagles. While we suspect that the primary source is spent lead ammunition, knowing the exact sources of lead is critical for effectively combating this problem.
  • Another way that The Raptor Center is addressing the issue of lead poisoning is through increasing public awareness of the presence of lead contamination in our environment and the dangers of lead to birds of prey and other wildlife.
  • There is hope for the lead problem as many non-toxic and convenient alternatives to lead-based ammunition are available.

Take advantage of this matching grant opportunity - double your impact and help us combat lead poisoning!
