Research Interests
Research in my laboratory focuses on the pathogenic mechanisms of bacteria causing disease in production animals.  I am particularly interested in better understanding the mechanisms of virulence and antimicrobial resistance employed by bacterial pathogens of poultry and swine.  Much of my work has used genomics-based approaches to answer questions related to Salmonella enterica and Escherichia coli.  Because of the importance of large plasmids in the virulence and drug resistance mechanisms employed by these bacteria, another area of interest is in the horizontal gene pool and the mechanisms and biology of horizontal gene transfer and host:chromosome regulatory “crosstalk” mechanisms.
