Junior SAVMA Delegate
The Student AVMA (SAVMA) Junior Delegate has the responsibility of representing the University of Minnesota at the national level. This is accomplished through the attendance at all executive meetings during SAVMA Symposium and AVMA Convention. The Junior Delegate will be selected to serve on one of the following SAVMA committees: Animal Welfare-Human Animal Bond Committee; Committee on Communications; Economics, Finance and Management Committee; Education and Licensure Committee; Emerging Issues Committee; Government Affairs Committee; International Veterinary Exchange Committee; Multicultural Student Outreach Committee; Native American Project Committee; SAVMA Symposium Committee; or The Vet Gazette. These committees are set up to mirror our parent organization's (AVMA) structure and committee members have the opportunity to work with the AVMA committee. The delegates are part of a national student body called the SAVMA House of Delegates (HOD). The HOD is made up of two representatives from all U.S. veterinary schools as well as Canadian and Caribbean veterinary schools. During the HOD meetings delegates will work both in their committees and with the entire house to update all delegates on their committee’s activities with written committee reports. The delegates discuss and vote on various issues concerning veterinary students and veterinary schools and serve as the link between the AVMA and SCAVMA. During their term, the Junior Delegate is also responsible for advertising submission due dates and distributing The Vet Gazette to students at the University of Minnesota. During the summer after their first year the Junior Delegate will attend Veterinary Leadership Experience. Upon returning they will work with the President-elect and faculty to organize the Gopher Orientation And Leadership experience (GOALe) for incoming first year students. It is also the Junior Delegate’s responsibility to encourage CVM students to attend SAVMA Symposium by providing information as well as helping to organize lodging, transportation, and funding for UMN students.
