Undergraduate Equine Program

Undergraduate education is a central element of the mission of the University of Minnesota Equine Center. In September 2004, the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences launched a new Equine Science option for students enrolled in the Production Systems area of emphasis within the Animal Science major. For the first time, undergraduate students in the Twin Cities area can incorporate coursework in equine science into their degree programs. New courses that are now available include:

ANSC 3007 Equine Nutrition taught by Dr. Marcia Hathaway

ANSC 3052 Equine Anatomy and Exercise Physiology taught by Dr. Christie Malazdrewich

VPM 3700 Equine Reproduction and Breeding Management taught by Dr. Scott Madill

ANSC 2055 Horse Health Management taught by Dr. Christie Malazdrewich

ANSC 4102 Equine Management taught by Nicky Overgaard, course instructor; offered by video link from the University of Minnesota - Crookston

The Equine Science option is unique among undergraduate horse programs because it brings together faculty and facilities from both the Department of Animal Science and the College of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to formal coursework, students enrolled in the Equine Science option have the opportunity to enhance their practical skills with horses through participation in one or more internships hosted by businesses and non-profit organizations throughout the equine industry. Examples of internships currently available to students include We Can Ride, a therapeutic riding organization, the Minnesota Hooved Animal Rescue Foundation, Peterson and Smith Equine Hospital, and Cedar Ridge Arabians.

For more information about the Animal Science degree program, please contact the College of Agriculture, Food, and Environmental Sciences at 612-624-3009 or online at www.coafes.umn.edu. For more information about the Equine Science option or any of the courses listed above, please contact Dr. Christie Malazdrewich at 612-625-6733.

The Equine Club is the Student Chapter of the American Association of Equine Practitioners (i.e. Equine Club) is an organization that provides veterinary students with the opportunity to enhance their knowledge of horses and equine medicine through various educational presentations, wet labs, activities, and projects throughout the academic year.
