Total Joint Replacement

What is a total joint replacement (TJR)?
Total joint replacement is when an arthritic or otherwise damaged joint is surgically removed and replaced with a plastic or metal prosthetic implant.  The prosthesis is designed to allow the joint to move in the same manner as a normal healthy joint.

Why total joint replacement?
The goal is to relieve pain and improve mobility in the damaged joint.  A joint can be damaged from traumatic injury or through naturally occuring processes such as arthritis. TJR is only considered after thorough physical, diagnostic, and radiographic evalution, only after exploring more conservative treatment options that do not relieve the pain and disability.
