Submission for Electron Microscopy
Pathogen Identification Clinical cases - Sample type (table) and quantity:
- Secretion, exudates, lavage, fluid, and feces: >0.3 ml
- Papule and tissue: >0.3mm (biopsy)
- Sample must be collected in any available sterile vial and submitted fresh or refrigerated at 4 degrees C.
- Sample must be correctly identified with case number, animal species, type of sample, date of collection, submitter contact information.
Cultures isolate (Please contact Dr. Aníbal G. Armién): - Known agents (samples with control cell line for negative stain)
- Unknown agents (samples with control cell line for negative stain and isolate embedding)
Tissue Ultrastructure - Tissues fixed as soon as possible in one of the following EM fixatives (optimal method):
- 2.5% Glutaraldehyde, 0.1M Sodium Cacodylate buffer
- 2.0% Paraformaldehyde/ 0.5% Glutaraldehyde, 0.1M Sodium Cacodylate buffer
- Karnovsky’s Solution
Biopsy or any tissue collected from a fresh animal carcass should be placed in EM fixative, ideally within a period of 6 hours after death.
- Tissue fixed in 10% Neutral Buffered Formalin (NBF)
Biopsy or any tissue collected from a fresh animal carcass should be placed in 10% NBF, ideally within a period of 3 hours after death. No tissue size is required. - Paraffin-embedded tissue
Tissues fixed in NBF from biopsy or a fresh animal carcass, ideally collected within a period of 1 hour after death.
Sample Submission Please submit samples using our submission form, with full information: - Disease history
- Pathology report and diagnosis
- H & E slide (if available)
