The goal of the Laboratory for Udder Health is to provide high quality laboratory services to dairy veterinarians, producers and other industry professionals. Our core strengths are in microbiology and milk culturing. We are committed to developing innovative approaches in laboratory diagnostics to help the dairy industry produce the highest quality milk.

New Diagnostic Tool for Mastitis Pathogen Identification
March, 2014

The University of Minnesota Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory has a new instrument for identifying bacterial organisms.  This instrument is called the MALDI TOF MS, which stands for matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry.  The Laboratory for Udder Health is now using this instrument to identify mastitis-causing bacteria in milk samples.  For more information on how this may affect your milk culture results, please read Interpreting Culture Results from Quarter Milk Samples.
