The University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) recognizes the unique and enduring bonds that form between people and their companion animals — companion animals who are family members, confidantes, guardians, and best friends. When these bonds are tested by illness, behavior problems, injury, or death, it can feel overwhelming.

In an effort to enhance support for clients and their families, the VMC offers the services of trained social work staff who understand both the joys and the challenges associated with animal companionship. A partnership with the School of Social Work provides a full-time, licensed social worker and a half-time M.S.W. intern who are available to provide support, advocacy, and referral services to clients dealing with issues related to their companion animals' health, wellness, and death. These client services include:
|
|
|
· Support with decision-making concerning treatment
· Support with decision-making involving end-of-life issues
· Information and support during emergency treatment
· Support before, during, and after euthanasia
· Grief-related education and crisis counseling
· Support and advocacy during surgery and/or treatment for chronic illness
· Support and advocacy regarding behavioral difficulties
· Referrals to community resources
