Bella

Our three year old Pekingese, Maltese and Yorkie mix was hit by a SUV on March 22, 2013. Bella, had her eyes on a dog across the street, and when the door opened just a crack, she decided to race after the dog. Instead of making a new friend, she was hit by the front left tire of the SUV coming down our street.

Bella was hit and thrown from the car. She remained conscious and we rush to her aid to carefully get her out of the road. We took her to our local veterinary clinic in Caledonia, MN. Her trauma was far out of their specialty and they transferred us to Rochester, MN emergency vet clinic. They stabilized her there and reduced her pain and sent us up to the U of M Veterinary Medical Center. We arrived to the VMC around 1:30 a.m. on Saturday 3/23/13. When we arrived, a vet technician came to our truck and carefully took her into the emergency department.

It was the scariest event my husband and I ever experienced, but right when we arrived to the U of M, there was a sense of relief and calmness. The entire staff was absolutely wonderful. They were honest, hopeful, and very empathetic. After spending 2 1/2 days in ICU, she had surgery on that Monday. Dr. Kieffer and Sara Losinski, her student at the time, were the most amazing human beings we encountered in a long time. They never lost sight of their job, and they never made us doubt that what we were doing was wrong.

Bella had numerous pelvis fractures and both pelvises detached from her spine, her right hip was fractured and it dislocated from the joint area. She had no internal bleeding, organ damage, or damage to her spinal cord. To say she was lucky, is an understatement.

It's been about a month and a half since Bella's accident. She is walking around the house, and starting to play with her "brother", Blu! Blu has been a huge part in Bella's recovery, being very patient, loving, and a great napping companion. Bella's personality was never hurt during her accident, she remains spunky, loving and just as adorable as before her accident. We cannot thank the staff at the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center. We now look forward to coming in for check-up's, even though we live 2 1/2 hours a way.

From the bottom our our hearts, thank you. We will never be able to say that enough, or repay you. I'm a Wisconsin girl, but have become a huge Gopher's fan!

Sincerely, Bethany, Brandon, Bella and Blu
