VERNDALE, Minn. (WCCO) — Cats and dogs can get heart problems just like people and while it’s fairly easy to implant pacemakers in dogs, it’s very tricky and dangerous in cats.

Last month the University of Minnesota performed its first-ever pacemaker surgery on a cat — and it worked.

The American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care has officially designated the University of Minnesota Veterinary Medical Center a Level-1 Animal Trauma Center, alongside nine other veterinary hospitals and clinics nationwide.

“We have a rooftop deck on our offices,” Strachota said. “When I let him out to go to the bathroom, he looked across the roof and it looked like it continued. He couldn’t see it dropped off, and he jumped.”
